What is Inclusion?
Inclusion means…
Students with disabilities are in general education classrooms and
settings with their same age peers without disabilities
All
students’ with disabilities are full members of the school community and
have the chance to participate fully in school activities
Education is based on the needs of
each individual child, not on his/her disability label
Benefits for Children…
Children
develop friendships and learn how to play and interact with one another.
Children develop a more
positive image of themselves and a healthy attitude about the uniqueness
of others.
Children with special
needs have opportunities to learn new skills by observing and imitating
other children.
Research says...
Children with mild to significant disabilities in inclusive settings:
Gain social and communication skills
Increase participation and
independence
Increase academic
achievement
Develop positive behaviors
Take part in more school
activities.
Inclusive practices help to create an
atmosphere in which children are better able to accept and understand
differences among themselves.
