A check in the amount of $18,602.50, generated by the 2015 Mel Fisher Days, has been presented to Wesley House Family Services by the Fisher family.

“We appreciate the annual support that Mel Fisher’s Treasures and their events give to Wesley House,” says Director of Community Relations Jeremy Wilkerson. “They’re always so generous to the community with their dedication to the children and families of Monroe County.”

Wesley House Chief Executive Director Beth Barrett continues, “We are so excited to receive this donation, which is 20% higher than last year.”

The funds will be used to support our efforts with our Healthy Families Monroe program.

Thanksgiving Day looked especially  good and tasted even better for dozens of households served by Wesley House Family Services as FURY Water Adventures Key West and The Westin Key West donated a total of 90 turkeys. Even the fixin’s were provided.

As important as the sustenance offered, such donations demonstrated yet again how the community cares, Wesley House CEO Beth Barrett explains.

“The Holiday period from Thanksgiving through the New Year can be bleak for families in need, fractured households and single-parent scenarios,” notes Barrett.  “We’re grateful that the Keys continues to recognize the need and value of serving the disadvantaged in Monroe County. The 75 turkeys from FURY and 15 from the Westin  ensured our families had a dinner table like any other neighbor.”

As Barrett points out, Monroe County’s working poor – who often represent the essence of service, construction, tourism and water-based economy – struggle to survive, sometimes juggling multiple jobs on weekends and late-night. It can often, unintentionally, result in a choice between basic necessities like utilities and nutritious, plentiful food.

Providing the means for some semblance of annual tradition is another key part of the mosaic.

“Structure and sharing is something we emphasize,” Barrett elaborates. “Parenting skills, a sense of togetherness, preparing foods in the kitchen together…we at Wesley House are committed to helping families heal and bond through what others may take for granted.”
