Anyone wishing to work in a child care facility or family home must complete 40 hours of required training.  This is comprised of a 30-hour required course, Introduction to Child Care and Behavioral Observation and Screening, plus ten hours of specialized child care training in one of the following areas:  Infant/Toddler Appropriate Practices; Preschool Appropriate Practices; Special Needs Appropriate Practices; or School-Age Appropriate Practices.

If you are hired to work in a center-based or home-based program, you must begin the 40-hour training within 90 days of your hire date.  Within one year of your hire date, you must complete and pass the competency exam.  Additionally, all child care providers must complete the online five-hour Literacy Course for Birth to Five Years found on the following website:  http://training01-dcf.myflorida.com/dcf/cct/literacy.html

Required Course Work

CHILD CARE TRAINING PART I: Introduction to Child Care + Behavioral Observation and Screening.

This mandatory 30-hour course is designed to prepare child care teachers and family home providers to work with children in center-based and home-based programs. It provides training in the following areas: Child Growth and Development (six hours); Behavioral Observation and Screening (six hours); Health, Safety and Nutrition (eight hours); Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (four hours); and Rules and Regulations for Child Care Facility and Family Home Child Care (six hours).

CHILD CARE TRAINING PART II: Specialized Child Care Training.

(each module is ten hours--choose one) The ten-hour training requirement can be met by taking one of four specialized modules, specific to the age group the provider will be working with in a child care center. The four modules are:

♦ Infant/Toddler Appropriate Practices
♦ Preschool Appropriate Practices
♦ Special Needs Appropriate Practices
♦ School-Age Appropriate Practices

These four training modules are based upon the developmentally appropriate practices criteria established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The curriculum focuses how child caregivers can ensure that Florida’s children are happy, healthy, involved and safe while in child care.
